We love to share all our learning so follow us on Twitter @Y5Redgate
In Year 5, children are learning to be independent in their reading, including book choice and are encouraged to read each night at home. They follow the school reading scheme and once they have finished their reading book, they independently change their books. Every child, in a small group, has a reciprocal reading session to assess their comprehension skills, the children also enjoy quiet reading time each day.
Spellings are given out on a Monday and children are tested on Friday.
Homework is sent out on a Friday and needs to be returned to the class by the Wednesday. The homework is either a piece of English or Maths, however Miss Stratton may set a project linked to topic that can be completed in a more creative way.
Maths homework will sometimes be online at Abacus Maths (see link below - school code 3r3a)
It is hoped children in Year 5 will become experts in their times tables and we do regular class challenges to help us enjoy and improve our knowledge. All children are expected to know their tables to 12x12. It is hoped parents will support their children in their learning and are encouraged to spend time on this with their children. Miss Stratton also has some lovely games and websites along with Abacus Maths Each child also has an individual log on for www.activelearnprimary.co.uk using the code 3r3a.
Please do ask for any ideas to keep this important learning fun!
Please make Miss Stratton aware if your child has any medical conditions or there is a change in any circumstances. If your child needs any medication it must be handed to a member of the school office accompanied by a letter signed by parent/guardian.
Please can all children ensure that their PE kits are in school and available at all times. We have two sessions of PE each week and children are required to wear PE kit of black shorts, Redgate PE blue top and black pumps. Children will be asked to take their PE kits home at the end of each half term to be washed and return them ready for use on their first day back at school.
As well as whole school 'dojos' available for the behaviour and attitude Redgate expects - prompt returning of homework, including evidence of reading at home, being a good friend, manners etc, the children in Year 5 have a daily VIP. This is to recognise the efforts children are making to maintain a growth mindset and mindful attitude to their daily lives. This includes showing determination, perseverance, resilience, trying challenges and sticking with them even if they are tricky and having a positive outlook to every challenge they face. It is one of Miss Stratton's favourite times of the day and is usually a very difficult choice!
