Welcome to Class One!
Our class teacher is Mrs Cox and we are helped by our teaching assistants Miss Westley, Mrs Roberts, Mrs McCormack and Mrs Davis. We are a small and friendly class where individuality is valued and everyone is made to feel welcome.
Our half termly topics are:
Autumn One – Climate and seasonal change
Autumn Two – What life was like when my grandparents were young
Spring One – Toys and games
Spring Two – Animals (including humans)
Summer One – Plants and animals
Summer Two – Materials
During the school year we study a wide and diverse range of children’s literature. The texts we cover include:
Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett
Footprints in the Snow by Mei Matsuoka
Traction Man by Mini Grey
Lila and the Secret of Rain by David Conway
The Flower by John Light
Little Red Riding Hood (traditional tale)
Beegu by Alexis Deacon
We follow The Sounds Write synthetic phonics programme. This enables us to further develop our skills in reading and writing. We have daily timetabled group guided reading sessions to complement our individual reading opportunities.
In handwriting we focus on the correct formation of letters and in developing the cursive style of writing.
In PE lessons we develop skills in gymnastics, dance and games. P.E. kits are left in school for the whole half term and then taken home to be washed during the holidays. This is to ensure that the children are always able to fully participate in all activities.
We follow Mr Potato Head rules (see below for details) and we are rewarded by Dojos, Star of the Week and Good News postcards. Monty the Meerkat goes home each day with a child who has demonstrated an excellent approach to work and a fantastic attitude towards others.
We send spellings home on Monday. Please help your child to learn their spellings each evening. Ten minutes a day is better than forty minutes once a week! Our spelling test in on Friday.
Children are encouraged to read every night and reading books are changed at least once a week.
Maths or English homework is set every Friday and should be returned to school by Wednesday.
For maths homework please log on to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk. The children have each been given a username and password which you will find in their homework book. The school code for Redgate is 3r3a.
Please ensure that school is kept fully informed of any medical needs your child has. All medication should be labelled and sent into school accompanied by a letter signed by a parent/guardian.
